How does Perkville track who referred who?
Perkville can track referral relationships in two ways, depending on how your referral page is configured:
1. Referrer enters their friend’s contact information
If your referral form allows users to directly enter their friend’s name and email, Perkville records the referral relationship at the time the form is submitted. This method also triggers an email to the referee with the referral offer.
Note: This method is becoming less common because it requires the referrer to input their friend’s contact details manually, which can lead to a lower conversion rates and potential issues with unsolicited emails if the entered email is used for marketing purposes because the referee did not opt into marketing yet.
2. Referrer shares a referral link
If the referrer shares the referral offer via their personalized link (e.g., through text or WhatsApp), Perkville tracks the relationship when the referee clicks the link and claims the offer (step 3 here). The referral link is encoded to the referrer, so no manual input is needed.
Important: The referee must use the same email address they used when claiming the offer when performing the qualifying action to complete the referral (e.g. buying a membership, making a purchase, etc). If the emails do not match, the referral will not complete, and no points will be awarded to the referrer.
